How hard is it to make a black and tan?!
Last Friday, I met some friends over at Liquor Lyle’s in the Minneapolis uptown area. Overall it was a great time and good to catch up with everyone. We all enjoyed their happy hour 2 for 1 drink special until 11pm. I started off by ordering Johnnie Walker Black Label on the rocks which we learned was included in the happy pricing! (Kudos for including this in the happy hour special)
After getting my fill of whiskey, I decided that perhaps it would better to move on to beer. It was especially exciting to learn that they had 1554 on tap! This is absolutely one of my favorite tap beers. I had recently been at the Enjoy Restaurant in Apple Valley where I re-discovered my liking for black and tans. I decided since Liquor Lyle’s had Guinness and Harp on tap that I would order some black and tans.
My first black and tan was excellent. It looked like what I am used to seeing from a regular black and tan…that is the Guinness on top and the Harp on the bottom. I finished my two black and tans from the happy hour pricing and started thinking about winding down for the night. I decided to order one more black and tan to end the evening on a relaxing note. Apparently, there was a switch in bar tenders. The “black and tan” that I received looked more like normal Guinness to me. The waitress claimed that the harp was being added, but I am not so sure. If any harp was being added, it was so little that I couldn’t taste it.
Below are the pictures of my regular black and tan and the other “black and tan”. I’ll let you be the judge and see if you would call the second picture a black and tan. (Note: Not that I would ever send back a beer from the tap, I didn’t do that. I did enjoy the drink, but it’s not what I was expecting)

Regular and very tasty black and tan!
Overall, it was a great evening. The happy hour specials and tap beers were definitely appreciated. I was just surprised by a bar tender’s definition of “black and tan”.

I ordered a black and Tan at Granite City and it looked like your second picture. The two were not serperated at all.
haha the 2nd one looks like straight guinness. nice site btw.
Thanks for stopping by…I guess its hard to find a bartender who makes a decent black and tan these days.
Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the black and tans at Granite City. I shall cross them off the list! If you can’t make a black and tan, I’m not going there
