Tom Bihn Aeronaut Bag - Carry Legal and converts to a back pack

Tom Bihn Aeronaut Bag - Carry Legal and converts to a back pack

For anyone who’s been following my blog, you probably know that I’m going on a trip to China on August 29th (11 days away!). Most recently, I’ve discussed my thoughts about my trip in the post titled “15 days to China“. I’ve also talked about booking my hostels and selecting my airline seats and receiving my visa.

With the addition of my Travel Gear page, I thought it would make sense to list out the items that will be with me in China and discuss my rational for some of the items. As I’ve stated in the announcement regarding the travel page, I’ll be posting reviews on individual items piece of gear reporting on what worked out well and what didn’t.

The Items in My Travel Bag for China:

  • Black Aeronaut Bag with an Absolute Shoulder Strap and 1 Large and 2 Small packing cubes.
  • Brain Bag Laptop Backpack.
  • Nikon D90 with 18-200mm lens and 50mm fixed lens.
  • 2 Pairs of The North Face Paramount Convertible Pants.
  • Keen Sandals.
  • 5 pairs of ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxers.
  • 4 pairs of Tilley Fast Drying Travel Socks.
  • Ecco Tasman GTX shoes
  • 2 Search Alert Luggage locks.
  • Travel Plug Adapter.
  • Silk Sleep Sack.
  • Microfiber Travel Towel.
  • Toiletries Kit with toothbrush, travel sized tooth paste, travel sized mouth wash, deodorant, and electric shaver.
  • 2 ExOfficio Dri-fit 2 shirts.
  • 1 Tilley Outlast Short Sleeve T-Shirt.
  • Canon SD800 Digital Elph.
  • Zune 120GB MP3 player.
  • Packing and Gear Rational
I really wanted to pack light for this trip. In my previous trips abroad, I had felt like I had too many things or the wrong type of things. Additionally, I didn’t want to check any luggage and I wanted to be able to quickly pack up my things to be able to move from city to city without much hassle. I’ve done a pre-packing run with most all of the above mentioned gear. I’m pleased to report that I can either carry my backpack on separately and have room to spare or if I so choose, I can put the backpack inside the duffel bag and carry only one bag on the plane.

1 large and 1 small packing cube with mostly everything packed. I can put the dSLR in one of the side pockets and my sandals in the other side pocket.

For the clothes I am taking, I had two requirements – comfortable to wear and fast drying. In my previous journeys abroad, I had always taken jeans, cotton socks, tshirts, and boxers. Not so with this trip. A common theme is that the clothes are fast drying and claim to be comfortable. From the reviews I’ve read, other users would agree. I’ll post my own thoughts after I’ve survived China.

I’m taking two digital cameras with me because I still feel I can get good shots with the SD800. I may not always want to have my D90 out and it may be easier for me to reach my pocket sized SD800 to get a quick shot. That said, I’m taking the D90 to have the best chance at capturing high quality photos of things like the Great Wall and Terra Cotta Warriors.

I hope this has provided some additional insight into my gear of choice and why I’m taking some of the things. It’s 11 days to departure. I’m looking forward to this trip.
